Introducing a Summer Challenge worksheet to make learning more exciting for our kids

Summer is in full swing! This year, things are a bit different, as we still haven’t returned to in-person sessions with our kids. To keep our students engaged and excited to learn this summer, we put together a VU Summer Challenge worksheet for our students.

While this doesn’t replace our sessions, it allows us to supplement academics and help our kids get excited about new topics. You might notice an emphasis on reading; this is an a particular area of focus for our students. In the future, we can cover other topics of interest, such as math, music, history, math, science, languages or technology… the options are endless.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Volunteers share the worksheet their student and have the child choose an activity to complete.
  2. After each activity is completed, the student marks an X in the appropriate square (or the volunteer can make a note separately, if working virtually).
  3. Have the student save their work to bring to the classroom when the school year starts.
  4. Once 10 or more activities are completed, the student or volunteer shares the completed worksheet to receive a prize. If they finish the entire page they might get a little something extra!
