Communities need different types of organizations to keep them running, including nonprofits, publicly funded services, and for-profit organizations. Publicly funded services, such as the public library, provide much needed resources to the people of a community, and in the process, they create jobs. For-profit organizations also create jobs and provide much of our day-to-day needs, such as groceries, as well as more luxurious services, such as Uber and Lyft. Nonprofit organizations, like Vecinos Unidos, fill in the gaps by addressing needs of a community that aren’t covered by the other type of organizations.
If nonprofits don’t get paid for their services and aren’t publicly funded, how can they afford to operate? That’s where community and corporate partners and sponsors come in! Many small nonprofits, including Vecinos Unidos, are run completely on volunteer hours and donations. We rely on these partnerships and sponsorships to keep our program running.
Why Sponsorships are Important for Nonprofits
While all donations are important for nonprofits, sponsorships can bring in larger amounts of funding that help nonprofits carry out specific events and functions. For instance, an event held by a nonprofit is often funded by corporate and community sponsorships. Sponsorships are also often used to help cover the operating costs of running a nonprofit, such as any rent paid to maintain a location.
At Vecinos Unidos, we’ve been very lucky to have the Ruth and Hal Launders Charitable Trust as our main sponsor for many years. They’ve generously provided us with the funds we need to make sure our program can keep the doors open for our students. The more sponsorships we have, the more benefit we can provide to our students. A great example of this is the individual tutoring these sponsorships have helped us provide for our students that have aged out of VU to help set them up for success in middle school and beyond!
How Corporations Benefit from Sponsorship

You may be wondering why corporations would bother giving money to nonprofits; after all, their whole purpose is making money, not giving it away. While some of them may do so primarily out of the goodness of their hearts, there are a variety of benefits that a for-profit corporation receives when they donate money. This means that corporate sponsorships are a win-win for everyone involved!
One of the main benefits corporations get from donating to nonprofits come in the form of tax write-offs. Much like you and me, corporations can deduct money given to nonprofits from their profits to reduce the amount of money they pay taxes on. The other main benefit comes in the form of good publicity. People often like to spend their money with companies that they feel good about, and seeing that a corporation has been giving to nonprofits that align with their values is often a great motivator for people to do business with that corporation.
In recent years, Vecinos Unidos has received quite a few corporate sponsorships. Some of these main sponsorships include ones with Sam’s Club and Starbucks. We also regularly received contributions from local grocery stores, like Giant, that help us ensure we have plenty of tasty and healthy snacks, so our students have the fuel to keep their brains running during VU sessions!
Benefits of Community Partnerships

On a smaller scale than sponsorships from large corporations, partnerships in the community are also very important for nonprofits, including with other nonprofits, government organizations, and small businesses. For government partnerships, these often come in the form of help with advertising and grants. Small businesses and nonprofits can also help each other advertise, and both have an interest in the community succeeding.
When it comes to partnerships with other nonprofits, there are many ways that both organizations can benefit from working together. In addition to help with advertising, different nonprofits may be better at different aspects of running their organizations and they can help each other in areas where one is strong and one is week. Nonprofits may also have functions or missions that complement each other well, allowing them to pool resources to further both organizations’ impact.
We see great examples of these community partnerships during our Summer Program every year. The week before school starts, Vecinos Unidos hosts a Summer Program for our students to help them avoid the “summer slump” in the new school year. Each day of the Summer Program includes a field trip for students along with our regular tutoring program. We partner with a variety of organizations to make these field trips a success.
For the 2024 Summer Program, we partnered with KidCreate Studio in Ashburn to offer our students an “art in the park” experience. We also partnered with Anna Sudha Community Kitchens, which is also a nonprofit organization. The cooking class they provided for our students was actually also a fundraiser for them! We are proud that they helped us teach our students something about cooking and proud that we were able to contribute to further their mission of providing healthy and economical food to all!
How You Can Help
If you are apart of or run a local organization of any kind, we’d love to discuss a partnership or sponsorship with you! However, the biggest impacts of our program come from individuals. Even small donations make a difference and add up. The cost of a children’s book is usually $15 or less, so even a donation of this size can put a book in a child’s hand. We are also always looking for great people to volunteer to work with our students or offer other talents!
It takes all kinds of people and organizations working together to make a nonprofit successful. At Vecinos Unidos, we are so thankful for all of our volunteers, partnerships, and sponsorships. Each one plays a role in helping our students do better in school and setting them up for success as adults in the future.
