VU has been adding more students over the past few weeks and recent attendance has been steady with about 14 students each day–and an occasional spike to more than 20! That’s amazing and we love it, but to ensure that there’s someone to help each student with his or her homework and listen to them read, that means we also need more than a dozen volunteers for every session.

If you are looking to give a couple of hours a week to a great organization doing fun work that makes a big difference in children’s lives and in the community, join us. The more committed volunteers who come to Connections for Hope to work with VU, the more difference we can make. Check out www.vecinosunidos.org for more information.

All students who participate in VU agree to share their reports cards with us. They get a small prize for bringing them in–we get the gift of knowing how they are doing in school. For some, we find out that we need to dig a little deeper in their backpacks and memories to find the homework to be done! This round revealed that many of our students are doing well, and their efforts to do their homework and be engaged learners are paying off. Others still need encouragement and support to continue to grow, especially in language arts.

Sometimes what needs improvement is their effort. That’s a little harder to do than a page of math homework, but volunteers can take the time to talk to students about their work, nudge just a little when they need it, and recognize when they make an effort and succeed. Hey, that sounds pretty much like what we all need, doesn’t it?

On Groundhog Day, the furry critter saw his shadow and went back to bed for six more weeks, but it looks like students did no such thing because they are showing up at VU in strong numbers! Last night 17 students kept 9 volunteers busy as they did their homework and read–or got in some extra work with division flashcards as one young man decided to do.

VU has welcomed some new students in the past few weeks and they are getting into the routine along the regulars. With friendly and helpful volunteers; hundreds of books to choose from; educational resources, such as flashcards and manipulatives; and games to play when the work is done, why wouldn’t they want to come? It really is a great place to get support and learn–for students and adults.

Like Amazon or Netflix, VU is always acquiring new titles–for our reading cart! Last week through the joint efforts of Barbara and Bob, 25 new titles were added for the children’s enjoyment. Many of them are for beginning readers and given our voracious group of first and second graders, they will be well-worn in no time.

Reading and homework are the two pillars of VU. It’s really satisfying to watch a reluctant or struggling reader steadily gain confidence and develop skills and, finally, realize that they actually like reading after all. Volunteers are always welcome to help with reading so even if you’re not sure about your homework skills, listening is highly valued at VU. We’d love to have your help.

VU has been on quite a roller coaster ride in January. Student numbers have been up and down ever since the holiday break. On consecutive days, numbers of students attending have been 2, 18, 10, 6, 26, 9 and 19. Last week the busy day was Wednesday. This week the busy days have been Tuesday and Thursday.

If you are a volunteer already or want to become one, I can’t promise you a busy night or a slow night. I can only promise you that when you help a child, the universe smiles. (You and the child will be smiling too). I can honestly say that I always leave homework assistance feeling better than when I arrived!

One thing I know for sure is that VU will have 0 students on Monday, January 16, because the schools and VU will be closed in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr, who fittingly wrote:

“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broad concerns of all humanity.”

Here’s to living and the great work that VU volunteers do.

On Tuesday, it seemed that the new year of homework assistance might get off to a slow start, but Wednesday dispelled that notion! Last night 18 students and 6 volunteers, all so happy to see everyone again after the break, got down to work on math, reading, and social studies.

Everyone behaved beautifully and worked hard; students pitched in to help one another too. Have to give kudos to the two high school students who were there and handled multiple students with ease.

Four more students were registered so we’ll be seeing some new faces over the next few weeks. If you don’t volunteer already, we’d love to see you there too!

It may have been unseasonally warm outside last night but inside was full of snow flakes and holiday cheer. Thursday was the last night of homework for 2011, and the VU elves gathered to help nine students with their homework and reading and say goodbye until 2012!.

But it was a special night, so afterward the students made lots of snowflakes to take home with them, and each received an adorable stuffed bear and homemade cookies. The smiles on everyone’s faces, kids and grown-ups alike, reflected the good will and happiness that give meaning to the holidays.

The VU board wishes everyone a healthy and happy new year.

December has gotten off to a great start for the homework assistance program and VU. First, the VU board added a new member, Akanksha Raol. Akanksha is a microbiologist who has also taught eighth grade; her background and enthusiasm make her a valuable addition to the board and a wonderful resource for students.

VU also continues to welcome new volunteers, including a new high school student, who increase our capacity to help more students. The students love working with the high schoolers, who are wonderful role models as well as sources of knowledge!

Although the numbers had been steady at about 10-12 students through the beginning of December, Thursday brought 21 students and 11 volunteers out. After homework and reading were done, a volunteer quizmaster helped prepare students for a big social studies test. It was so much fun that even students who didn’t have a test coming up joined in! A great night for everyone.

The Thanksgiving break was wonderful, and VU volunteers are refreshed and back at work assisting students with homework. On Monday, another valuable lesson was learned as one of our young learners came in with directions for a project that was due on December 9. With the assistance of a volunteer, she was able to build a tepee and finish the other components of the project completely. Oh the joy of getting done early and being prepared!

VU has been collecting report cards so that we can keep track of how all the young scholars are doing. As with all of us, each student has areas of strength and areas they need to continue to work on, with additional support from VU volunteers. It’s so rewarding to see the pay-off for students who work hard to do homework and other assignments. Everyone had some success in something. Once we have most of the report cards, the president of VU will do a confidential report analyzing the results and looking for ways that volunteers can be more effective with specific students.

Everyone who brings in their report card gets a new toothbrush (choice of colors) and two small tubes of toothpaste. You’d think we were giving them candy by their responses! This prize was a hit.

This is a short week because of Thanksgiving, with sessions only on Monday and Tuesday. Hope you all enjoy a wonderful holiday with family and friends.
