This winter, we learned how whales, polar bears, penguins, and other mammals stay warm in icy water. The kids made their own “blubber” gloves using vegetable shortening and plastic bags. They experimented by dipping their hands in a bucket of ice water to feel how the extra layer of fat works as an insulator. (We tried it too– it really worked!)
