The 2013 VU Summer Program officially kicked off on July 2 with students and volunteers spending the afternoon playing traditional board games. Old favorites were brought out and new games introduced. The kids love playing computer games–and will get to do that during the summer program also–but they have lots of fun with the low-tech games too. Although it has only been a few weeks since we last saw the students, some of them seem to have already grown several inches! We also welcomed many new volunteers for the summer, both adults and high school students. We look forward to getting to know them and hope that many of them will return for the homework assistance program in the fall.
In place of our traditional first-day ice cream sundaes, we had a special ice cream cake in honor of our volunteer Mary’s birthday. What a great way to start the summer program and keep kids interested in reading and learning while they are having fun!
