Volunteers Are the Heart & Soul of VU

  • April 30, 2013

Volunteers are the heart and soul of the homework assistance program. Without them there is no program!  Students would have no help learning about numerators and denominators, identifying geometric shapes, “getting” phonics, reading new books that challenge them a bit, understanding what drew settlers to Jamestown, and so much more. The patience, humor, kindness, and wisdom imparted everyday to every student in the program is remarkable. There is no sufficient thanks for the contributions they make to childrens’ lives and learning, but that doesn’t mean we can’t try.

Last Thursday, 31 volunteers enjoyed a lovely dinner at Luciano’s in Herndon, VA, and were able to relax and be feted for their generosity of spirit. It’s an honor to to work side by side with the wonderful adults and high school students who show up every week and so satsifying to be able to thank them and recognize their efforts.

VU volunteers: You’re the best!
