Water Balloons and Solar System Hopscotch

  • August 16, 2012

Summer break may be winding down but the summer program at VU is showing no signs of slowing. Last week’s Field Day drew 8 kids and as many volunteers on a hot afternoon. Games of bean bag toss and horseshoes were fun, but the races and the water balloons were hands-down favorites for both staff and volunteers. Sack races and relays carrying potatoes on spoons got everyone more than ready for the water balloon games. The best part was when the volunteers and the students teamed up. Some people got more than a bit wet, but others who were more sure-handed stayed perfectly dry–not sure which one was more desirable! Fruit popsicles were a perfect end to a great afternoon.

On Wednesday the fun continued with a bit more academic learning folded in. Innovative VU volunteers cominbined lessons about the solar system and Mars in particular with games to come up with the popular Solar System Hopscotch, Mars Bingo, and more. I’ll bet that combining fun, movement, and facts means that the 11 students will retain the  knowledge they acquired.

There’s more to come as we keep the fun going and the kids minds primed for back to school. Don’t you want to be a part of all this? Volunteers are always needed and there’s an orientation coming up in September, so contact VU now and commit to helping students succeed in school this coming year.
