As the year comes to a close for homework assistance, the volunteers and students have quite an array of emotions. Honestly, I hear there were some tears in the parking lot–and from the adults! The students are of course looking forward to summer–no school and hopefully the fabulous VU summer program.
The volunteers are also looking forward to their summer plans but with slightly dampened spirits knowing that our dear sixth-grade students are aging out of the program. Many have been with the program for years, and it’s sad to see them go despite how excited we are for their growth and new opportunities. I guess we just have to make sure they come by to see us over the summer or in the fall to let us know they are doing fine. Fortunately, most leaving this year have siblings remaining in the program, so we won’t lose touch completely.
Every ending is a new beginning, and we certainly hope it’s the beginning of something wonderful for the rising seventh-graders who have “graduated” from VU homework assistance. We wish them the very best.
