Capacity to Grow

  • November 14, 2011November 14, 2011

Thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers, Vecinos Unidos has had a successful first quarter. Children are coming regularly as they need help, and our new students and volunteers have become valued members of the VU community. But we can’t rest on our laurels! We have a waiting list of children who would like to attend if we only had the volunteer capacity to do so. We have the physical space–we need more volunteers. Please contact us if you can help.

On a personal note, I had a volunteer moment last week that defines for me the small joys of volunteering. As I was helping two of our fourth-grade students with some math, I made a mistake naming a place value in decimals. Both boys caught it immediately (it was almost like I planned it!), but that wasn’t the best part. One of them looked over at me and said encouragingly, “That’s OK; don’t worry. You probably just didn’t see it right.”  They are learning math and English language arts and so much more from our efforts.
